  • Birmingham Metropolitan College Jobs Fair

Charlie hard at work Today I’ve been presenting to and talking with a bunch of young people interested in apprenticeships at the Birmingham Metropolitan College Jobs fair. It was really good to see local MPs, business leaders and training providers come together to tackle youth unemployment in the Midlands.

Having been through the apprenticeship system myself at Trilby, I’ve been really keen to raise the awareness of apprenticeship opportunities. I believe doing an apprenticeship was the best career decision I ever made.

It was interesting to meet so many young people who are in a similar situation that I was in just over a year ago. I hope that by having shared my experience as a graphic design apprentice with Creative Alliance Birmingham, that I inspired others to take the same road.

I was invited to share my experience at today’s job fair by Bally Bhogal from LEP Skills For Growth. Working as a duo with Bally, we encouraged young people to go after their dreams and it was really refreshing to meet other people from like minded organisations.

I don’t think anything like today has been achieved in the Midlands before, I'm hopeful to see more of these over the coming months and I’d love to get involved again.

I hope many of the people that I spoke today now see apprenticeship schemes as genuine way to kick start their careers.

  • Welcome to Charlie

    Charlie hard at work

Our latest Trilby employee started on the 1st July, although technically he has been with us for the past 12 months in an apprenticeship role. Charlie came to us as part of the governments apprentice scheme where employers and apprentice work together to understand the job role and both have the chance to 'try out' the workplace.

Charlie fitted right in with the team from day one and has grown to lead on the design elements for our in-production software. His exploratory attitude to design and his passion to understand the user experience has seen us produce some of the best products we have ever made.

Charlie is currently hard at work producing the design and interface elements for our ICT Self Assessment tool which will be added to our training app over the summer. Download the app now and look out for the next update!

  • Long Term Training Plans

It seems these days we are always writing about being busy - but that's just the way it is!
What I find interesting though is that the 'type' of busy is changing. We are still doing inspiration sessions and one day training projects in schools, but we are seeing schools taking training far more seriously and wanting more long term input from us.

Our recent work has seen us providing intensive training programs to our partner schools involving 2-3 trainers per day, spread over 6-10 days and delivered over a few weeks. What has been great about these projects is the opportunity that we get to see our training bringing results in to the classroom.

Pottery artwork display from Bewsey Lodge Primary

Bewsey Lodge Primary has been a great school to work in, after a curriculum planning session and a skill based training workshop the staff took a simple iPad pottery app and used it to teach a maths lesson. Students modelled their pottery and collected virtual cash to buy paint and improve their designs. These were then used in class where students created their own auction and recorded financial transactions. We have a few days of training at Bewsey Lodge left to go including a big celebration event where all staff will get together to share what they have learned and plan in their ongoing support for each other.

Whatever style of training you want or however serious you are about understanding how technology can improve teaching and learning, trilby is here to help.

  • A Summer of Opportunity

As the cold weather finally retreats and the sun raises its more than welcome head every morning, I have to say I’m looking forward to the Summer for many reasons. Trilby has certainly been working very hard over the last few months with the launch of our new website and the release and update of our iOS Training App. In regards to training work, Apple has presented us with quite a few exciting opportunities including the chance to support their £500 million a year distribution channel business. We will also be delivering ‘Learning with iPad’ and ‘Growing iPad Sales in Education’ courses for Apple's ASE reseller channel across the UK and into Belgium.
On a personal note I’m currently putting together my Amazon project for 2013. I will be returning to Ecuador to work with young people from three separate communities and creating iBooks on iPads. The months are going by quickly but there's never a dull day in the land of Trilby Multimedia.

  • Crazy March

Well what a crazy March that turned out to be ! 17 days of training all across the UK and beyond including 3 days of Apple Lighthouse training in Tallinn, Estonia.

Last year I was lucky enough to journey to countries such as Croatia, Estonia, Latvia and Turkey delivering iPad training. My second trip to Estonia saw me returning to the very esteemed ‘Gustav Adolf’ school in Tallinn. My first trip was back in August 2012 where I delivered iPad and ePub creation training sessions to school staff. This time the first day focused on very curriculum based iPad sessions covering History, Maths and Science.

Neil's Volunteer didn't know what to expect

On the second day we built on last years ePub session and really got our hands dirty with Apples iBooks Author application. Teachers built an Amazon book with iBooks Author but also used the Macs built in iLife tools to create content as well. Again I was humbled by the way I was treated during my visit and thank all teachers from Gustav Adolf school for my presents :)

Next visit looks like being in August when I’ll be back to support their Apple Lighthouse event where they will be inviting other schools from Estonia and beyond.

  • BETT 2013 In Review

BETT 2013 took place last week at ExCeL in London near the Royal Victoria Dock. Directors Ben Stanley and Neil Emery were both present at the show. Here's their write up.

Neil Emery - Apple Education Mentor

I can’t say I have ever known 4 days go past me so quickly. The reason for that was BETT 2013 was simply a fantastic experience. I love my job because I get to present to education focused audiences on the strengths of technology in the classroom. My sessions at BETT 2013 with fellow ADE Chris Smith saw me dress up as a Basketball player for our iPad in PE presentation. As a Scientist donning white coat, hard hat and safety glasses for our iPad in Science session.

    Neil experiments with exothermic reactions

For the finale a hoody and Orbital style light up glasses for our Music Production with the iPad session. I had a lot of fun and so did Chris, and for us both thats very important. I have a feeling that teachers forget sometimes that learning should be fun and when it is, we all learn more. I certainly know more now about the techniques needed for a basketball Free Throw, what an exothermic reaction is, and how to play the bass part and melody line to the classic 80’s tune Axel F. So a big thank you to three very reputable Apple resellers in Albion Computers, KRCS and Western Computers, as without them my attendance would not have been needed. But the biggest thank you goes out to my fellow ADE Chris Smith for making this years BETT so much fun. If anyone is interested in our training services or our inspiration sessions such as those delivered at BETT, then please get in touch ! Final words of wisdom from me - See you next year :-)

Ben Stanley - Apple Education Mentor, Apple Certified Trainer

My BETT 2013 experience involved far less costume changes than Neil, but I was very proud to be supporting RM Education in their 1:1 Computing zone. The big blue polo shirt with the largest ever RM logo will be burned in to my mind for some time! We were insanely busy from doors opening on the Wednesday to home time on Saturday.

Ben Stanley at BETT with RM

Along with my three Apple focused colleagues, we talked nothing but iPads to the many hundreds of visitors to the stand. Questions around iPad management, volume app purchasing, training and support were the basis of many enquiries that we effectively answered. Some schools wanting to jump in to 1:1 and some really not sure where to begin, there really was a great variety of visitors at this years show.
The best part of BETT was showcasing our new RM Trilby Training app, which is an iPad app that has nuggets of learning placed next to our course catalogue, reminding people that training is just as much a part of any successful iPad deployment as the iPad themselves. It is great that the Trilby team were able to support four of our reseller partners at this years show. I know we will be there again in 2014 so see you there!

  • Trilby at BETT 2013

  • Two Mile Ash Academy

Two Mile Ash is an Academy school in Milton Keynes with a thirst for continuous improvement. After meeting the Senior Leadership Team at a reseller sales event the relationship with TMA and Trilby grew. Now some 18 months on the school has seen massive improvements in the use of ICT across the curriculum in all parts of the school.

When they came to us TMA had a selection of laptops which were being used for world processing and some page layout. Now with a whole range of new ICT equipment and the skills to use it they are making music, animating, creating video and using more media than ever.

Key to the success at TMA was an effective professional development process. We designed a training programme which took a small selection of teachers on a journey which in turn was cascaded through to other staff. This led to a 'want' to learn from the teachers as they saw their colleagues using these new tools and wanted to get in on the action.

Our work at Two Mile Ash is on-going. We frequently review how ICT is being used and work with key staff to influence curriculum planning. As an Initial Teacher Training School, TMA often invite us back to talk to trainees who are just starting their teaching career giving them guidance and support on how they too can be more technologically creative in their working practices.

TMA and Trilby will continue to work together to ensure the school remains an outstanding place to learn.
