  • Trilby’s infectious enthusiasm leads to support of Royal Hospital School at The Suffolk Show

It started with a training session focused on iPad usage in schools and led to the attendance of The Suffolk Show and the installation of TrilbyTV! That’s the effect Trilby have on the schools they work with. Their enthusiasm, passion and commitment to technology in education are truly infectious.

Neil Emery, Director at Trilby, initially delivered a two-day training session on the use of iPads at the Royal Hospital School (RHS) in Suffolk. The training was so well received that the head of marketing at RHS, Sophie Braybrooke asked if Trilby would like to support them at The Suffolk Show. Despite the fact this wasn’t a specific educational/technology event, and was a more a traditional county show, the Trilby team decided it was important to support a well known and respected school like RHS, who have embraced technology to help keep them at the cutting edge of education delivery.

The Trilby team were very well received by students, prospective students, teachers and parents, who were all very keen to be involved in their filming activity. Teachers and parents were also very enthusiastic about the forthcoming iPad implementation at the RHS and were very impressed with the idea of showcasing work and creating their own TV brand.

Hardeep Mahal, Associate Trainer at Trilby commented, “We were showcasing TrilbyTV and demonstrating how it has helped reaffirm the RHS as a forward thinking school. Students got involved and filmed over 25 fun facts tracing the history of the RHS against our mock-up green screen studio! We were on hand to answer questions from teachers and students and show how easy it is to showcase and celebrate work. Parents who were initially apprehensive about iPads being introduced into their school, soon changed their minds when they saw their children up on the television screen sharing historical facts!”

Neil Emery concluded, “We are extremely passionate in supporting all of our customers and helping them to achieve real success when embedding new technologies into the curriculum. It’s great that we are able to convince even the most reluctant parents that within the right educational context, technology can be an extremely powerful tool in the hands of the learner. The RHS is an excellent beacon of how successfully technology can be integrated into the curriculum to enhance the whole learning process. We know the RHS will use TrilbyTV to its full potential to help motivate students by showcasing their work on a daily basis.

  • Trilby success at Lithuanian education conference

Neil Emery, a Distinguished Apple Educator and Director at Trilby recently delivered a keynote speech at a major conference in Vilnius, Lithuania on behalf of Apple Value Added Reseller, AVAD. Many government officials, teachers and head teachers attended the conference. The conference focussed on current education trends and Neil was asked to share his vast experience of the UK education market and use of mobile technology in the classroom.

Neil explained the changing culture of the classroom and how every student having their own mobile device has created a whole new opportunity of learning. Each device is like an individual blackboard which teachers can utilise to engage with their students and share information.

During his keynote speech, Neil demonstrated a great deal of empathy towards the teaching staff who would be adopting these new ways of teaching. He showed he understood that the buy-in and learning process could take some time, but that it was equally important for schools to embrace technology as soon as possible. This way they would ensure they did not lose the interest of their students, many of whom are already technically astute

Neil also answered numerous questions about mobile technology put to him by the Lithuanian press, which have since been publicised on various websites across the country.

Sigitas Liaucius, Education Business Development Manager for Apple Value Added Reseller AVAD, who asked Neil to speak at the conference, commented

"We started to work with Neil a couple years ago and were delighted to invite him as a keynote speaker to our conference. His huge experience of working with various schools around the world makes him so passionate and knowledgeable. Training sessions and workshops are always great fun with Neil. The teachers just love him. Neil is like a breath of fresh air for Baltic education."

As Neil was so well received at this conference, he’s been asked to speak at another event in Estonia in August, and is also delivering training to Tartu Erakool School in Estonia at the beginning of June.

  • Hello Kasra

A big welcome to Kasra, the latest member to the Trilby team. Kasra has joined us as part of the Creative Employment Programme through Creative Alliance which helps organisations like ours to employ apprentices and interns.

Kasra will be working closely with Anna, Operations Manager and will be involved in bringing our products, TrilbyTV and TrilbyBookclub to a wider audience.

    Hello I’m Kasra,

I’m from Birmingham and have joined the Trilby team in an exciting role as Marketing and Operations Intern. I studied Economics and Politics at Oxford Brookes University and gained an enthusiasm for business and in particular marketing, during my studies.

Trilby has given me an excellent opportunity to develop my passion for marketing in a fantastic company, which is developing great products and challenging my abilities on a daily basis. I have been given many responsibilities since joining Trilby and look forward to being part of the success of the company.

  • Welcome to Veronika Sassmann

We would like to take this opportunity to welcome Veronika who has joined us on a 3 week internship as part of an exchange program and will be working closely with our Operations Manager Anna Field.

Having sent our past design apprentice Charlie to Germany on a similar exchange program and knowing what a great experience he had, we hope Veronika finds that she has an equally great experience here at Trilby.

    Hello I’m Veronika,

I am from Neuhütten a small village in Germany and I am taking part in a four week exchange program, to improve my English skills and to learn something about a different culture.

During my time in Birmingham I am staying with a nice host family and taking part in an internship at Trilby for three weeks, where I assist my colleagues with their work and in return they help me with my language skills.

I really appreciate this opportunity, to not only gain a living experience but also gain work experience abroad.

In Germany I do an apprenticeship in industrial business management, which takes three years and I am currently in the second year. After finishing the apprenticeship I want to go to university to study economics.

  • Amazon Project – Special event

Join Distinguished Apple Educator Neil Emery, as he discusses his recent trip to the Ecuadorian Amazon rain forest.

Come and join our very own Neil Emery from Trilby and hear how he travelled to the Ecuadorian Amazon Rain Forest, armed with 16 iPads to engage with pupils from schools in 3 different communities. Working in partnership with 4 UK schools plus project coordinators and guides in Ecuador, Neil spent 3 weeks inspiring pupils to use iPads to enhance their learning.

Amazonian pupils were given the challenge to create eBooks using iPads and the popular education app ‘Book Creator’ and then share them with each other as well as the partner schools in the UK.  A total of 40 eBooks were created in 3 schools, each showing:

    • Who I am
    • Where I live
    • My favourite animal
    • My favourite bird
    • My favourite story/tale

These pupils had previously only come across tablets in their communities to watch films or access the internet, never in an educational capacity. Neil will show you how Apple technology was utilised to encourage and motivate learning in these Amazonian schools.

  • Blogging from the Amazon

Our intrepid explorer Neil Emery is out in the amazon again this time working with three tribes to produce ePub content. The main focus is to deliver curriculum content and materials to the Amazonian students that will give them knowledge, lifelong skills and confidence, increasing their capability to identify, plan and participate in and to build technology based projects.

We are working in the UK with Elm Park Primary School, Flitch Green Academy and Willow Wood Primary School who have also produced content which Neil has taken out to share. The shoe project is being documented on our wiki server and you can read more in Neil's first day blog here.

  • Press Release: TrilbyTV

[The following is a press release from Trilby regarding our new product, TrilbyTV. For more resources, visit www.trilbytv.co.uk/press.]

Many schools across the country have invested in tablet technology, but are they using them to their full potential? Research indicates that used correctly, tablets are fantastic learning tools and can really inspire students and aid teaching. A potential barrier to tablet technology being fully utilised in schools is the complexity of storing and moving work and sharing finished pieces between students and staff.

For any tablet technology to be successfully used, it needs to be beneficial to learning and student achievement, and must be simple to use both by teachers and students. Any apps need to seamlessly integrate into the learning environment and curriculum so they don’t detract or become an additional “chore” which impinges on everyone’s time. One new app and software tool which fulfils this criteria is TrilbyTV, which is being launched at BETT in January, 2014.

  • Trilby is 20!

    Trilby Office Hats

1st October 2013 was Trilby's 20th Birthday. It's been an amazing 20 years which has seen us grown from a 2 person 'working from home business' to 11 of us productively working away in the Loveday Street, Birmingham offices. We've had many join and leave over that time, all of whom have left their mark in some way on the Trilby machine.

Back in the early 90's we started running bulletin board systems and creating products on floppy disk. We travelled via CD-ROMs and the birth of the world wide web and are now happy in the world of mobile and online technologies. Our consultancy arm has spoken with thousands of people gathering a huge amounts of opinions, facts and information. While our training has gone from a few occasional days to seeing us work with over 1,000 schools and countless teachers per year.

We have over 50 products under our belt from books, to interactive multimedia content to online training systems and now iOS apps which are making a world of difference to those who are using them. As a software company with such a direct contact with our client group and end users we are unique. Ideally placed to work on education projects and products with access to those who will be using them on a daily basis.

As we look forward to another successful and exciting few years I would like to say a big thank you to all who have been part of our journey - exciting things are happening in the world of technology and we're approaching all of it with wide open eyes.

    Happy Birthday!

  • Back to School Training!

It's that time of year again and already we have been busy running iPad training sessions with staff preparing for the new year. Apple Professional Development or APD training is growing in popularity with Apple resellers incentivised to push this out to schools buying 50+ iPads. What is great about this initiative is that schools who previously would just buy hardware are now getting training and realising that it makes their technology purchase so much more effective.

If you are a school thinking of buying iPads talk to your Apple reseller about APD and how it can be part of the bundle of equipment you purchase.

The Trilby Training app [iTunes Link] has had an update and now includes our Self Assessment tool which helps to gather data around how comfortable, confident and competent staff are with technology. We think this is a far better measurement than a skill assessment as it looks at how capable staff are at putting technology in to use, not just how well they personally use it. Download the app and give it a go, we are very interested in your feedback as always.
