The Driving Your Life CD-ROM helps young people develop their personal core skills. The CD-ROM was developed with the students on the Birmingham Youthstart 2000 course which ran from late 1998 to early 2000. More details about that programme are on the BY2000 page of this site.

The CD uses the metaphor of driving as you move around a virtual ringroad stopping at the islands of Self Awareness, Decision making, Assertiveness, Career Pathways, Job Search and Telematics. Those are the topic areas of the curriculum used on the course and at each island there is an activity and a set of video clips of young people talking about the topic. The activities are based on different sorts of games and are designed to reinforce and consolidate learning.

All of the activities are backed up with text based information with 'Things to Think About' and 'Things to Do' which can be printed out and used by tutors and students. You are also able to interview 6 mentors by asking a variety of questions, like 'What is a Mentor?' and 'How long are the sessions?'

In 2000 we worked with the Careers and Education Business Partnership to create a workbook of further activities around the CD-ROM. This is available from CEBP.
