The main creative goals were doing a photo montage, making a Web Photo Story and creating a large mural. The photo montage work involved coming up with a concept around the theme, planning how to make it, posing and taking digital photos and combining these with backgrounds using Photoshop software. In the Web Photo Story each group devised a story, shot photos to illustrate it, made a web gallery in Photoshop and added text to the html pages to publish it on the web.
The large floor Murals were made by three groups. One of these is used on the Handsworth LIVE living history website and the others were made into scrollable web pictures.
Outside of these main creative goals there were taster activities, 30-45 minute sessions where the young people had an opportunity to work with other digital tools or visual artforms. This included painting using Graphic Tablets and ‘Painter Classic’ software; computer animation using ‘Poser’ software; traditional animation using drawn and modelled materials and recorded using digital cameras and BTVPro (shareware); and devising and creating short video clips using the phenomenally simple iMovie video editing software from Apple.
As a University of the First Age project the purpose of the programme was to provide alternative learning environments and opportunities not always available in a school setting. This was accomplished through the way the programme was structured to facilitate the following processes.
Collective production, giving participants opportunities to work as a team.
Experimentation - trial and error, failing in order to succeed.
Imagination, the opportunity to explore a new medium of expression in a non-judgemental environment
Creativity - the making of a product, bringing something new and unique to life.
Other work with the UfA includes the Young People's Parliament and the innovative PollCreator evoting system.
