The Rockefeller Foundation International meeting
'Community, Culture and Globalization'
Tony Stanley our Creative Director was part of this significant international meeting at the Rockefeller Foundation's Study and Conference Centre in Bellagio, Italy. Community Cultural Development workers from around the globe came together to share common issues and to develop ideas for action.

Aims of the conference.

  • To exchange information and ideas about cultural responses to accelerating globalisation.
  • To identify assets and obstacles of community cultural development practice as a response to the forces of globalisation.
  • To identify priorities for action to support the preservation and promotion of diverse cultures and of democratic participation in community cultural life in societies throughout the world.

The Foundation arranges international meetings each year where expertise from around the world is brought together to analyse, debate and plan actions to address global concerns.

The conference was preceded by online discussions around the issues during February and March with the findings from the meeting due to be published in a post conference book which will contain essays from all 25 participants. This will be the follow-up volume to the conference 'primer' - 'Creative Community - the Art of Cultural Development' by Don Adams and Arlene Goldbard, the conference organisers.

We are very flattered to be described in the Rockefeller Foundation's literature as 'leading practitioners' in the field of community cultural development and will use this opportunity to press our views on the importance of a communities' direct involvement in the development and preservation of their culture, and of the ways that new technology can support this. We took some of our processes to the meeting and used our Positive Diversity project as a model for debate.
